Retirement age of university teachers

  • The state government has issued a circular stating that university and college teachers who are to retire between September 21, 1998 and April 20, 1999 can continue to work till the end of this academic year. According to the circular issued on December 9, the state government will bear the financial burden of the teachers' salaries and other benefits.

    The government issued the circular keeping in mind the University Grants Commission's plan to raise the retirement age of college teachers from 60 to 62. As the Central Government notification on this has not yet arrived, the state circular clarifies the position of teachers till then, said Tapati Mukhopadhyay of the Bombay University and College Teachers' Union. Teachers who retired in between can now rejoin duty.

    Till now, the management had to bear the financial burden of granting extension in service to teachers.

    Royal College celebrates 10 yrs

  • The Royal College of Arts, Science andCommerce at Mira Road, established in 1989, is celebrating a decade. The college will host a science exhibition on January 14, 15 and 16 in the college campus. The college will celebrate its 10th Annual Day on February 21.

    BARC, ISRO, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, MTNL, Nehru Planetarium, GMRT & others are expected to participate in the exhibition.

    All colleges of Mumbai University and schools from Goregaon to Virar have been invited to participate in the exhibition. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the best projects in groups. Those interested can call on 8111930 or 8111298 for details.

    Free net services offered to NGOs

    Seminar on oral history at MMK

  • The R D National college will organise a seminar on oral history between January 4 and 6, at the M M K college Conference Hall in the college premises. The seminar, which is funded by University Grants Commission and the Housing Development Financial Corporation, will look at history as told through first-person narrations.

    Screening for osteoporosis

  • Glaxo India Limited will conducts a mass screening of patients suffering from osteoporosis on January 3 at Hyderabad Estate, Napean Sea Road. The bone density of a patient will be checked by asking the patient to put his or her foot on a bone densitometer. This test will be done free of cost.     Talk on laser cooling

  • Professor Claude Cohen-Tannoudji will deliver a lecture on Laser Cooling and Trapping on January 4 at the Homi Bhabhaauditorium. This talk is the first in the Bhabha lecture series. Professor Tannoudji is currently at the College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris. He is an eminent physicist and has received numerous international honours.
