Mayor shifts to official house; partymen skip function

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, JAN 3: Mayor of the Municipal Corporation, Kewal Krishan Adiwal, today shifted to his official residence in Sector 24, 10 days after taking over the post.

Even though hundreds of Adiwal's sympathisers attended the `grih pravesh', those conspicuous by their absence were all five BJP-SAD councillors including former Mayor Gian Chand Gupta. None of the Congress or SJP councillors were present.

Prominent among those who were present were local MP Satya Pal Jain, Adviser Jagdish Sagar besides other senior Corporation officials.

Party's local president Dharam Pal Gupta did not turn up as he was reportedly not in the city.

The Corporation had distributed 200 invitation cards while 800 cards were dispatched through Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Such a `grih pravesh' function has been organised for the first time since the Corporation came into existence.

Interestingly, Adiwal flanked by MP Satya Pal Jain, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor received the visitors during the entire function. The BJP-SAD councillors, on terms of anonymity, said that the function was held to woo councillors who voted against him in the recent elections.

In a joint press release issued today, a BJP-SAD councillor Desh Raj Tandon and city Akali Dal president Gurpartap Singh confirmed that the BJP-Akali Dal alliance boycotted the programme. "Adiwal must seek a vote of confidence in the House to be called a city Mayor," they said. They also accused him of having misused official machinery during the function.

Meanwhile, Mayor laid the foundation stone of Valmiki Ashram in new Mauli Jagran Colony (Shahid Bhagat Singh Colony), today.
