Manoj, Vijay cause upsets

PUNE, Jan 5: Unseeded pairs of Manoj Kumar and Vijay Khanna of Andhra caused a major upset defeating No 2 Amrish Shinde and Mayur Ghatnekar of Railways 15-5, 17-14 to enter the quarter-final round in the men's doubles event of the All-India VV Natu Memorial Badminton Championship at the WIE complex here today.

Top seed Manjusha Kanwar of Maharshtra got a walk over from Tanuja Begum of Kerala in the women's event.

Women's singles: Nirmala Kotnis (A-I) bt M Radhika (AP) 11-1, 11-3; D Shwetha (A-I) bt Kirti Kadam (Rlys) 11-4, 13-11; Ch Deepti (AP) bt Meenakshi Wagh (Mah) 11-3, 11-6; Archana Deodhar (Mah) bt Ketaki Thakar (A-I) 7-11, 13-10, 11-7, Trupti Murgunde (Mah) bt Shalaka Damle (A-I) 8-11, 11-5, 7-0 (conceded); PVV Laxmi (AP) bt Kranti Sane (Mah) 11-6, 11-2.
