Unions urge scrapping of profession tax

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE  
MUMBAI, JAN 5: The Trade Unions Joint Action Committee (TUJAC) has demanded scrapping of the hike in the profession tax condemning it as an extra burden on the working class. The committee plans to hold a statewide convention in the first week of February, 1999 to mobilise public support.

According to the committee, the state government had `arbitrarily' announced a hike of almost 100 per cent. In a press note, the committee has pointed out that the alliance government had promised the working class that the tax would be scrapped after they come to power.

The committee has representatives from Centre for Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Congress, Sarvashramik Sangh, Hind Mazdoor Kisan Panchayat and others.
