No re-election at MSU, contempt against VC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Jan 5: The repoll to the M S University students' union was not held on Tuesday with the hearing in the spate of petitions challenging the re-poll being adjourned to Thursday. The petitions are seeking a court directive to the university to initiate the entire election procedure afresh before holding the polls.

In another development, the city civil court issued contempt notices to the M S University and the students' union following a petition objecting to the university's circular on Monday stating that the university wished to hold the elections but would wait for the court directive till 11.30 a.m. Notices were issued to Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane, Pro vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar De, Registrar N M Pandya, president of student union S R Pandya and returning officer N M Bhatt. The hearing for the same would be held on Thursday.

Petitioner Janak Makwana contended in the petition that the university circular amounted to contempt since it sought to convey the impression that the elections could be held at 11.30 a.m. even though interim stay orders were in force.

A press release issued by the university on Monday had read: ``University authorities are wedded to democratic process and as far as possible they would like to hold election as scheduled within the framework of law.

``However, they will wait up to 11.30 a.m, the repolling scheduled time, for the court's verdict. In view of appreciating the amount of efforts put in by large student communities and the employees of the university towards election process, the decision to wait for the final court's verdict is arrived at''.

The petitioner pointed out that though the hearing in earlier petitions challenging the repoll was scheduled to be held at 3.30 pm on Tuesday, the administrative authorities continued with the procedures to hold a repoll. He claimed that the press release was misleading for the students since on one hand they spoke of waiting for the verdict and on the other demonstrated its preparedness for elections at 11.30 a.m.
