VGS announces future plans

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Jan 5: Establishment of cells in Ahmedabad to impart information on education and employment opportunities, tourism and commerce for the Gujarati populace in the State and abroad were announced as the immediate future plans of the Vishwa Gujarati Samaj on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, Samaj president Krishnakant Vakharia pointed out that while students from Gujarat faced hardships finding higher educational opportunities in countries like the United Kingdom and United States of America, those Gujarati students residing in the two countries were facing similar difficulties in tapping secondary education opportunities in India. ``We are working on a sort of a tie-up between agencies here and the foreign countries to help the respective students identify educational opportunities in India and abroad,'' he said.

Vakharia said another problem faced by the miscellaneous Gujarati schools in UK and South Africa was the shortage of efficient Gujarati speaking teaching staff. ``We hope to work on a system whereby teachers from here can find employment with such schools,'' he said.

Five resolutions were passed at the final session of the three-day World Gujarati Meet on Monday, prominent among which was the establishment of the `Narmada Samarthan Cell' to gather world-wide support for the Sardar Sarovar Project. Another resolution sought to put into implementation the suggestions made by the experts at the meet for the economic and commercial growth of the nation at an international level.

It was also resolved to observe the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on October 31 by Gujaratis all over the world as `Gujarat Gaurav Din' and to commemorate the centenary of Pt Omkarnath in 1999 by organising various programmes.
