Mumbai gasping to make Super League

Joe Williams
PUNE, Jan 6: Individual milestones overshadowed the team's performances in the last league match between Mumbai and Maharashtra, on the third day of the West Zone Ranji Trophy Championship, at the Nehru Stadium here today.

At draw of stumps, Maharashtra were 53 for one in their second knock in reply to Mumbai's first innings knock of 486. The visitors have accomplished part of their first mission, gaining a lead of 151 runs.

Mumbai's race in the West Zone Ranji Trophy Super League is virtually over as their coach Ashok Mankad said after learning the scores of the Vadodara and Gujarat match. ``The first session of 150 minutes of play could be the only time we can make some amends, as an outright win on this wicket is a forgone matter.''

If the matches at here and Surat end up in draw, Maharashtra and Baroda will make it to the Super League with 17 points each while Saurashtra emerge as West Zone champions and claim the Talim Shield.

So far nothing is clear with another 90 overs of play still left inthe championship. Two centuries, one each by Manoj Joglekar (122) and Sameer Dighe (100) for Mumbai and a career-best haul of seven for 122 by Maharashtra speedster Milind Kulkarni hogged the days proceedings.

Joglekar notched up his first hundred of the season and the second overall, while wicket-keeper Sameer Dighe added the icing on the cake with a quick 50 and century later. Dighe scored his half-century in just 57 deliveries and raced to his hundred in telling fashion. From 86 he took just five balls to reach his milestone. And it was Maharashtra's Siddique who faced the onslaught as Dighe hit him for three consecutive fours and took a single of the last ball of the over to reach 99 and the first ball he faced off Milind Kulkarni was guided to third man for his hundred.

Mumbai's skipper Vinod Kambli made a quick 85 which came in 112 deliveries, and was instrumental in a 129-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Dighe.

Milind Kulkarni who was the only effective bowler for the hosts wrapped upthe visitor's first innings claiming all the last five wickets. His previous best was 6 for 67 against Vadodara in 1994-95.
