Commuter stabbed, robbed

A 35-year-old Western Railway commuter Anand Ambalal Patel was robbed and stabbed on the railway tracks near Bhayander station at 11.30 on Tuesday night. According to the railway police, Patel had got off a train from Borivli and was returning home when he was accosted by for unidentified persons and robbed of his silver chain and rings worth Rs 1250. He was then stabbed in the stomach. Patel was admitted to the KEM hospital early on Wednesday morning and operated.

Award for rights journalism

The People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has invited entries for the eighteenth `Journalism for Human Rights Award' comprising Rs 20,000, a plaque, and a citation. Reports on human rights situation in the country, published in 1998 in any language in any newspaper, magazine or journal are eligible. Essays, books and letters to the editor will not be considered.

Reports published in a language other than English must be accompanied by the original report and an Englishtranslation, stating the date of publication and the name of journal in English. It is requested to send entries in A4 format. The entries should reach Professor Y P Chhibbar, General Secretary, PUCL, 81 Sahayoga Apartments, Mayur Vihar-I, New Delhi-110091 by January 20.

Function by Andhra Parishad

The Andhra Saraswat Parishad will celebrate its golden jubilee on January 10 at the Bhavan Bag, Shankar Rao Pupalla Marg, sixth lane crossing, Mumbai 400008. The function, which will include dramas, felicitations and a mimicry show by Johnny Lever, will be graced by Sudhir Joshi, minister for education, Pramod Navalkar, minister for Cultural Affairs, Ramchandra Kanade, Secretary, Ministry of Education, Raja Gayange, Undersecretary, Ministry of Industry, S Lokhandwala, MLA, Kiran Surve, BMC corporator, Dilip Tammal, vibhag pramukh and former minister Syed Ahmed. Prayog Malad's activities

Prayog Malad, a social organisation working forthe cause of youth in Goregaon and Malad, is organising a quiz contest for students between grades eight and ten on January 31. Principals are requested to send entries of three student representatives. And for information on an inter-collegiate mono-acting competition, call on 8832903.

Prayog Malad has also organised a photography competition. All photos, in the size of 8''x 10'', must be sent to Kadambari Srivardhankar, Date building, Ganesh wadi, near Chincholi municipal school, N B Road, Malad (West), Mumbai-64 by January 22.
