SURAT, Jan 6: Christians of various denominations submitted a memorandum to former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, saying that the Christian community in Gujarat was a victim of violence and malicious campaign by fundamentalists and the government. The memorandum alleged that 19 churches had been burnt and 21 vandalised in over 50 cases of violence. Moreover, it said, pastors, priests, nuns and tribals were being intimidated; some had even been injuries.
``The violence against Christians is obvious and does not need any proof'', it said. The memo alleged that the community was being blamed for attacks on the Hindu Jagaran Manch rally, which had been permitted by the State government despite the inflammatory leaflets circulated prior to it.
If Christians and not rallyists were injured in the post-rally stone-throwing, how could they be accused of pelting the stones, the memo asked, describing as a lie the BJP-VHP-RSS claim that they had ``nothing to do with the violence''.
