High Court grants bail to Rajput

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Jan 6: Human Rights lawyer D.S. Rajput, arrested in the jailbreak conspiracy case, was today released on bail by Justice M.L. Singhal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Rajput, along with human rights activist Jaspal Singh Dhillon and nine others had earlier been charged by UT Additional District and Sessions Judge with "unlawfully" and "maliciously" conspiring to cause an explosion at the high security Burail Jail near here.

According to the prosecution, he was instrumental in the purchase of the mobile phone and SIM cards allegedly smuggled into the jail premises.

He had allegedly referred "co-conspirator" in the case, Jaswant Singh, to a shop located adjacent to his office in Sector 22 for purchasing the mobile phone. Jaswant had met Rajput on "hardcore militant" Jagtar Singh Hawara's directions, the prosecution had added.

The alleged conspiracy was reportedly unearthed by the Chandigarh Police with Satnam Singh's arrest on June 11. According to the prosecution, PETN explosive, to be smuggled into the jail complex, was recovered from Satnam Singh's possession. More explosive was recovered from his residence in Salimpur village in district Ropar.

The explosive, the prosecution had added, was to be employed for blowing up a portion of the jail complex for enabling former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's alleged assassins, Jagtar Singh Tara and Jagtar Singh Hawara to escape.
