January 7: Martina Hingis kept Switzerland in contention in the Hopman Cup today when she beat Lindsay Davenport who dethroned her as world number one last year.Hingis's mixed doubles win with Ivo Heuberger helped Switzerland to a 2-1 win over the United States pairing of Davenport and Jan-Michael Gambill.
Hingis, whose new year's resolution was to regain the number one spot, gave the Swiss the lead with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over Davenport in the opening singles.
Gambill, one of the rising stars of American tennis, beat Heuberger 6-4, 6-4 and then Hingis and Heuberger settled the match with a workmanlike 6-3, 6-3 win over Gambill and Davenport.
Despite losing to the Slovak Republic yesterday, Switzerland will be guaranteed a berth in Saturday's final if they beat Sweden 3-0 tomorrow.
The defeat left the second-seeded Americans out of contention for a place in the final.
Henman in quarters
DOHA: Top seed Tim Henman advanced to the quarterfinals of the $1 million Qatar Open on Wednesday bybeating Morocco's Younes el-Aynaoui.
The Briton beat the 26-year-old Moroccan 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Fourth-seed Goran Ivanisevic also advanced after brushing aside Christophe Van Garsse of Belgium 6-3, 6-0 in 43 minutes. American Jeff Tarango also advanced to the next round defeating Fernando Vicente of Spain 6-3, 7-5.
