Shivaji Nagar, Indian Navy in title clash

MUMBAI, JAN 7: Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana, Nagpur (SNG) and Indian Navy had few problems in setting up a summit clash in the men's final of the 2nd Fr Agnel Open basketball tournament at Vashi today. While Shivaji Nagar brushed aside Chembur YMCA by a 29-point margin, the Navymen ousted Income-Tax 68-47.

The morrow promises two exciting showdowns. Ghatkopar YMCA, whose stock has been soaring this season, will take on Mastan YMCA in the junior boys final for the second consecutive time: At their home tournament last month, Ghatkopar had won with comfortable ease. The men's final is expected to go SNG way, who have not lost in the city since June 1997.

Doctors in semis

Doctors Acharya and Pendharkar advanced to the over-45 semi-finals of the Khar Gymkhana veteran's doubles tennis tournament today. The doctors beat Satish Khanna-Thakurdas Jagwani 6-3, 6-1.

Over-45 (quarter-finals): Dr Acharya/Dr Pendharkar bt Satish Khanna/Thakurdas Jagwani 6-3, 6-1; DA Kapadia/A Natrajan bt S Dalvi/NK Choksi 6-1, 6-2; Sudhir Shah/Rajan Shahri b Mohan Belani/Jamnu Dhankani 6-1, 6-2; Dharmu Punjabi/Moti Shewararmani bt N Valecha/Mani Subramaniam 6-0, 6-2.

Over-65 (quarer-finals): Cap Godbole/Mohan Mirchandani bt C Fernandes/Bringi 6-2, 6-1; KC Rai/H Baijal bt RM Sane/Parulekar 6-3, 6-0; SC Kakar/Chandan Sidhwani b K Razdan/P Kewalramani 6-2, 6-1.

BESTdown Sachivalaya

BEST destroyed Sachivalaya Gymkhana's dream of making it to the top of the Punjab National Bank-sponsored BHA Third Division league by defeating them 2-0 at the Naigaum Police ground here today. BEST finished their engagements with two wins, one draw and a loss for an aggregate of seven points. Sachivalaya have won two matches and drawn on with two matches remaining. Sunil Sakre and Dominic Pereira scored for the winners.

Orissa, Maharashtra win

Orissa men and Maharashtra women won the team titles in the All-India Telecom badminton Tournament at the Andheri Sports Complex recently. Maharashtra and Mumbai finished second in men and women respectively.
