Bengal, Assam sail into quarters

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
CHENNAI, JAN 7: There was no perceptible change in the script as fancied teams won their matches with a measure of comfort, and quarter-finalists were spotted in the Indian Oil Servo 60th Senior Nationals and Inter-state Table Tennis Championship here today.

As the league phase drew to a close, defending champions Bengal and Assam in the women's section qualified for the knock out quarterfinals from Group A, while Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB) and Madhya Pradesh (Group B) and hosts Tamil Nadu and Delhi (Group C) made it to the second stage.

However, the picture was not not clear in Group D, though star-studded Railways have virtually assured themselves of a berth. It would be toss up between Punjab and Maharashtra A for the second spot.

In the men's section Punjab and Bengal (Group C), Bengal and Tamil Nadu (Group D) made it to the last eight grade. In Group B title holders PSCB have assured themselves of a berth, while Assam or Delhi would complete the quarter-final line up.

Strong contenderRailways, comprising Kasturi Chakraborty, Anindita Chakraborty and Montu Ghosh, survived a scare before edging out Maharashtra 3-0 for their second win in two matches.
