On Wednesday the duo were produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate K H Holambe-Patil who remanded them to police custody till Thursday.

CID officer held for hitting brother

Ever heard of junior police officers arresting their senior for a petty offence. That is what happened at the Oshiwara police station on Sunday.

Shivaji Bapurao Shinde (46), the senior police inspector of the special branch-I, criminal investigation department (SB-I, CID), was arrested on charges of assaulting his younger brother Sanjay and abusing his sister-in-law.

Shivaji and Sanjay were involved in a dispute over a flat at Lokhandwala Road for several years. The flat is in the name of Shivaji's sister but in Sanjay's possession, the police said. The feud between the brothers was could not be resolved despite the intervention of their father Bapurao.

On Sunday, Shivaji accompanied by his father went to Sanjay's house at Maharahstra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) colony at Oshiwara and barged in. After an altercation, Shinde began beating Sanjay and showered abuses on him. He was further provoked when Sanjay's wife tried to intervene and he slapped her too.

The Oshiwara police was summoned for help. Shivaji, who was allegedly inebriated, was hauled to the police station.

Since Shivaji was in plainclothes, the officers at the Oshiwara police station failed to recognise him as a cop. They were taken aback when he hurled profanities and identified himself as a senior police inspector.

They consulted the senior police officers who ordered that Shinde should be charged, policeman or not. The senior police inspector of the Oshiwara police station, Purushottam Mule, said, ``Shinde was charged with criminal trespassing (since he barged into his brother's house), assaulted a woman and abused her.'' However, the drunk PI was immediately released on bail after he was produced in a holiday court.
