Army entry banned in Dehu

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Jan 14: Following Tuesday's incident in which army jawans went on a rampage beating civilians in Dehu Road, station commandant Brig N S Sahaee has issued a directive banning the entry of army personnel in the main bazaar area.

``The town is out of bounds for all army personnel until further orders'', he said. Brig Sahaee said the process of an independent enquiry into the incident has already been initiated. Three army officers will be conducting the enquiry. The committee will submit its report by January 25. Meanwhile, the main bazaar was closed today in reaction to a bandh call given by various organisations. Notice-boards condemning the incident were put up at various places. Vegetable vendors said they had suffered a heavy loss as several of them had brought excess goods for Makar Sankranti. Brig Sahaee assured a delegation led by Member of Parliament Ashok Mohol that no one will be spared and serious action against the guilty will follow. ``We have taken a serious cognizance of the incident. The enquiry will cover all the aspects of the incident including how the jawans took the army vehicles from their unit," Brig Sahaee said. Expressing regrets over the incident, he asserted that such an incident will not occur in future. The fifty-odd jawans belonged to 19 Air Defence and Artillery Brigade. Mohol who was accompanied by former state minister Madan Bafna told Sahaee that the incident could have been more serious if the jawans were armed with weapons.

Brig Sahaee said he had given orders to seal the weapons in the units. The recommendations and findings of the enquiry report will consider the issue of compensation to the hawkers and vegetable vendors whose property was damaged. Reacting to the suggestion made by Bafna, Sahaee also issued directives to deploy at least eight army personnel for patrolling the main bazaar area in the evening hours. H e asked all the units to ensure that the military personnel returned to the barracks by 8 p.m. Khed deputy superintendent of police Rajendra Dahale, assistant police inspector of Dehu Road Ganpat Gaikwad and one of the army enquiry officers Lt Col A V Mudholkar visited the area to assess the damage.
