Citygritty -- Pune

Aishwarya and Shaan
Sci-High
A group of fresh-faced young students crowd around a scientific model, curiosity writ large on their faces. For those who cannot equate science with fun, the scientific toys exhibition - the Sci-Toy Show - at the Institution of Engineers should come as a surprise. ``Children have become mere spectators, not active participants, in the scientific process. Through scientific toys, we hope to promote their interest in science,'' says Suyash Dake of the Gram Vidnyan Manch, the city-based trust which has organised the six-day exhibition which started on January 13.

Through the use of simple material like balloons and spinning tops, these toys explain scientific principles. An interesting science quiz and even scientific models made by children themselves form another part of the exhibition. So children can now put on their thinking caps, and even have fun doing it.

Have a heart
Now, here's yoga exclusively for heart patients! Enterprising doctors in the city have organised a course for people suffering from cardio-vascular diseases, at the Symbiosis Centre for Health Care (SCHC) in association with the Kaivalya Yoga Institute. Doctors Jagdish Hiremath (cardiologist), R.G. Bahale (surgeon), Vidya Yeravdekar (director, SCHC) and Nitin Unkule (yoga therapist) have designed this course which will be held from January 15 to June 15 at the SCHC in the evenings from Monday to Saturday.

``This is the second programme the institute has organised after the first one proved to be beneficial to heart patients,'' says yoga expert Unkule, who has received his doctorate in yoga therapy. While the `students' are provided books on yoga for practice and meditation, prayers and audio-cassettes will also be utilised during the sessions. Heart patients can really take heart from this exceptional course.

Go with the flow
``To awaken the artist hidden in each of us.'' This is the promise that Jagruti, a creativity centre, holds for those who wish to attend their one-day workshop on creativity called `Jatra' on January 16. ``Many a time, our creativity gets shackled in inhibitions or in the everyday struggle to make ends meet. Through Jatra, we hope to awaken awareness about the different ways through which our creative self can find expression. Participants will be able to forge a bond as they express themselves through song, dance, poetry or simply through actions,'' says Ravibala Kakatkar, one of the organisers.

The workshop, organised by the University Women's Association (UWA) and The Network of Wellbeing, has been designed by Ganpati Date and will be co-ordinated by Deepa Shreeram. For those who want to get in touch with their inner creativity, the UWA hall, Gokhalenagar, is the place to be at 4 p.m. on January 16.

Different verse
Marathi poet Ba Si Mardhekar's experimental and unconventional style set a precedent in the field of Marathi literature. Taking his poetry as their benchmark, Niranjan and Anupama Ujgare will present a reading of the work of Marathi poets, called Mardhekaranpasun Aajparyant, which will include other poets like Pu Shi Rege, Vasant Bapat, Anuradha Potdar, Shirish Deshpande, Gurunath Samant, Rajani Parulekar, Neelkanth Kadam, Padma Gole and Prakash Holkar.

The one-and-a-half hour programme, organised by Srishti, a cultural organisation, in conjunction with Pune Vidyapeeth Bahishal Shikshan Mandal, will serve as an introduction to modern poetry with poetess Dr. Aruna Dhere as chief guest. This is the 25th such programme to be presented by the couple and will be held at the Bharati Nivas Society Hall, Prabhat Road, on January 17 at 6 p.m.
