SURAT, JAN 16: The police are likely to request the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to cancel the proposed visit of Sadhvi Ritambhara to the Dangs district, which was peaceful for the third consecutive day on Saturday.A senior police officer told The Indian Express that her visit at this juncture (when peace was making a comeback) might cause problems. ``We will advise against her visit,'' he added.Though the police are yet to receive the official programme of her visit, VHP's executive president Laljibhai Patel said the Sadhvi would visit the Dangs on January 24 to inquire after Hindu tribals who he said were feeling insecure. She would also go to areas where property damage had been reported, Patel said.
The Christian community has also decided to petition the authorities seeking cancellation of her visit in view of the improving situation in the trouble-torn district. A Republican Party of India delegation, led by its national president and Lok Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale, visited Deep Darshan School andSubir villages in the district. The police advised Athawale, who had many supporters in tow, against moving in a large convoy. A delegation of Shiv Sena activists from Surat also called on the District Superintendent of Police there.
CNI superintendent T V Gaikwad alleged that many villagers were still being threatened by the majority community for following a different faith. Girish Ramji Bhoi, a VIIth standard student, staying in Vanvasi Kalyan Parishad's ashram at Vaghai was thrown out because he refused to change his religion, Rev Gaikwad alleged.
The ashram is being run by Swami Aseemanand, the key force behind a spate of reconversions in the region. Gaikwad said he had taken up the case with the new District Collector J P Gupta, who took charge on Saturday.
The administration's efforts to bring the two communities together and start reconstruction of the damaged shrines with the help of Swaminarayan followers is yet to show results.
