$ 97-mn US aid to oust Saddam
WASHINGTON: The US will grant military aid worth 97 million dollars to Iraqi opposition groups against President Saddam Hussein ignoring the UN charter which forbids such interference. The Iraqi National Congress (INC) and two Kurdish militia groups controlling the northern part under US protection are among the seven beneficiaries to receive the assistance under the `Iraq Liberation Act', State Department Spokesman James Rubin said.Rubin said the Clinton administration was still considering whether to supply arms, vehicles and other military equipment to the designated opposition groups. The administration had decided to designate seven opposition groups including the INC headed by Ahmed Chalabi. The others are the Kurdistan Democratic Party, headed by Masud Barzani, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, headed by Jalal Talabani, and a group of constitutional monarchists headed by Sharif Hussein, a claimant to the long-abolished Iraqi throne.
