CM to check on viable sites for Vikrant

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JAN 16: Chief Minister Manohar Joshi has assured fisherfolk representatives that he will soon visit both Jamshedji Bunder and Oyster Rock to check on their viability as a site for berthing the Vikrant.

Colaba Jamshedji Bunder Bachav Samiti president Damodar Tandel informed that a delegation had called on Joshi on January 12, 1999 and apprised him of their concern over the berthing of Vikrant at Jamshedji Bunder. The livelihood of over 500 fisherfolk families living in ten slum colonies would be effected, Joshi was reportedly told.

Tandel said that Joshi was told that while the conversion of the battle-ship into a museum is on anvil, berthing it at Jamshedji Bunder is bound to result in traffic chaos and parking problems, as the path leading to Hotel Fariyas is one way. Ultimately, their homes will be targeted to provide parking facilities. ``Oyster Rock is deeper and will not need blasting of rocks. We told him that the Government, instead of spending Rs 70 crores, will save some Rs 50crores,''added Tandel, saying that Joshi promised to make a visit to both sites at an early date.
