Vodafone buys out AirTouch
British mobile phone company Vodafone Group has won the battle to buy US Wireless giant AirTouch Communications Inc in a deal worth roughly $60 billion, creating a global telecom powerhouse.

FIPB clears Essar, Fidis, BPL proposals
The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) yesterday okayed foreign direct investment proposals worth Rs 902 crore, including a 130-million dollar convertible euro bond issue by Essar Steel.

Excise revenue short of target
The excise duty collection in the nine month period ended December 31, 1998 is over 10% short of the targeted figure. The collection stood at Rs 34,900 crore as against the targeted Rs 41,000-odd crore.
