State to become power surplus

MUMBAI, JAN 19: Maharashtra will have a record power generation capacity of over 22,000 mw by the end of 2001, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Gopinath Munde, said here today.

Addressing a seminar organised by All India Association of Industries (AIAI) here on Tuesday, Munde said in the last four years, the state has received investment of over Rs 7,000 crore in the power sector alone thus becoming a power surplus state. "We are even planning to sell excess electricity to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka," he said. The new power projects in the state are being set up by Enron at Ratnagiri, Reliance at Patalganga and Ispat group at Bhadrawati, he added.

AIAI president Vijay Kalantri urged the government to speed up various economic reforms. ``The country needs huge investment in various sectors, especially in the infrastructure areas,'' Kalantri said.
