Korda beat Spain's Galo Blanco 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 after twisting his left ankle and requiring an injury time out in the third set.Korda's match was one of many on-court high points on a second day which saw French Open champion Carlos Moya and an armada of nine other Spaniards sink in the first round.

Korda, who tested positive for steriods at last year's Wimbledon championships, has been the subject of a player backlash after escaping a ban, with former champions Andre Agassi and Jim Courier joining the critics. But the capacity crowd of 6,000 people on Court One was cheering loudly for the 1998 winner.

French Open champion Carlos Moya was knocked out in the first round by Germany's Nicolas Kiefer. The No 4 seed was out-hit by the powerful No 37-ranked Kiefer, who won 6-7(7-9), 6-4, 7-6, (8-6), 6-3.
