Bribe row hits Commonwealth Games

ASSOCIATED PRESS
ADELAIDE, Jan 19: Leaders of the failed Adelaide bid to host The 1998 Commonwealth Games today said three Commonwealth representatives asked for scholarships for their children in return for their support for Adelaide's Games bid.

Nearly seven years after the South Australian city was beaten by Kuala Lumpur for rights to stage the Games, former Adelaide lord mayor Steve Condous and former sports minister Kym Mayes said officials from three countries asked for incentives to win their votes.

Condous said the requests were made by officials from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and an African country which he could no longer recall.

``They all asked for the same thing, they wanted us to set up one of their children at Adelaide University and pay for their five or six years' tuition there. I said:`I'm sorry, we don't do business like that.

``They (The Commonwealth Games) are no different to what's been going on in the Olympic Games. What is happening, even what happened during our bid, made me sick,'' Condous said.

IOC member resigns

Lausanne: Pirjo Haeggman, a Finnish Olympic champion, resigned from the International Olympic Committee today rather than risk expulsion. Mrs Haeggman was one of 13 IOC members to be caught up in the Salt Lake City corruption scandal.
