MUMBAI, January 19: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has a deficit that's peaking at Rs 500 crore. Right?Wrong, if you're a member of the Mayor-in-Council. Eleven MiC members and opposition Congress leader Kisan Jadhav will move into spacious chambers at the civic headquarters on January 21. The plush cabins will have even more plush decor to match: carpets which absorb one's footfall, well-upholstered sofas, polyvinyl flooring, wall-to-wall mirror works and glass panels, golden and silver plated door-knows, teak wood and veneer panelling, double ante-chambers with attached bathrooms. Commented Congress corporator Ravindra Pawar, ``It will put the cabins of Mantralaya ministers to shame. Even the ante chambers have an ante room.'' Mayor Nandu Satam, deputy mayor Gopal Shetty and chairperson Gajanan Thackre will retain their cabins.
When the mayor was recently questioned as to why Rs six crore had been splurged on constructing the cabins, he had merely said, ``Even the members want some comfort andconvenience. As it is, it will be a permanent feature for even the future MIC members.''
