Violence mars Id

PUNE, JAN 20: Id celebrations in Baramati were marred on Tuesday when a mob, wielding swords, iron rods and sticks, attacked eight persons over a dispute regarding the festival date.

Police reinforcements had to be rushed from Pune and Daund. The situation, according to the Pune rural police, is under control.

A series of peace committee meetings were being organised by deputy collector Milind Pathak, municipal council chairman Jawahar Shah and sub-divisional police officer Shashikant Gosavi to defuse the situation.

The injured, identified as Asif Iqbal Azmi, Ansar Nasir Shikalkar, Afrosh Hussain Shikalkar, Riyaz Aqbar Khan, Samir Yusuf Sayyed, Imran Jabbar Pathan, Gaffarlal Mohammed Bagwan and Raju Shabbir Bagwan, were admitted to the Government hospital in Baramati.
