WIJK AAN ZEE, JAN 24: Garry Kasparov was on rampage after acquiring unstoppable form at the 61st Hoogovens Grandmasters Chess Tournament. Logging his fifth straight win in as many rounds yesterday, Kasparov (5.5 points from six rounds) opened up a full point gap between him and India's Viswanathan Anand, his nearest rival.Anand played out a draw against dangerous Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine. In a sharp English game, Anand, trying to exploit the weakness of white's pawns on the c4 and h3 squares, went for the risky 12th move -- rc8 -- and 13th -- rac1 bxh3 -- only to be surprised by Ivanchuk's 14th -- nd5!. Anand resorted to sacrificing material to save the situation. With the Ukrainian in time truoble, Anand got away as Ivanchuk avoided complicated play. Results (Round six): Kasparov (5.5) bt Jeroen Piket (2.5); Kramnik (4) bt Shirov (3); Ivanchuk (3.5) drew with Anand (4.5); Svidler (3.5) bt Kasimdhzanov (1.5); Van Wely (3) bt Reinderman (1); Timman (3) drew with Sokolov (2); Yermolinsky (2) bt Topalov(3).
Indian women score
UBEDA (SPAIN): International Master K Sasikiran (2.5) lost to Russia's Garcia Silvina (3.5) while former National `A' champion Abhijit Kunte (2.5) was held to a draw by IM A Ivanov (2.5) in the fourth round of Ubeda International Chess tournament.
IM V Saravanan (2.5) and P Konguvel (2) drew, while D V Prasad (2), CS Gokhale (2) and R B Ramesh lost. The Indian women's team had a successful day as IWM Vijayalakshmi Subburaman (2), Pallavi Shah (1) and Mrunalini Kunte (1) scored quick wins.
Joshi takes sole lead
Jaipur: Five time National A player GB Joshi shot into sole lead with five points after five rounds in the Rs 1.5 lakh Pink City International chess tournament today.
International Master and top seed Verghese Koshi and NS Babu followed Joshi half-a-point behind while Maharashtra's IWM-elect Swati Ghate shared the third place with 13 others.
