SURAT, Jan 24: State Water Resources and Mining Minister Narottam Patel, while chairing a meeting of top district administration officials, called for a combined effort of the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) and the district administration to meet the burgeoning demands of the rapidly growing city. This was stated by Patel after Chief Executive Authority of SUDA, J B Vora listed down the future plans of the urban body, announced last week.
Pointing out that the overall growth of the city and its outskirts would be more effective if SUDA involved the district administration departments, he stressed for their active involvement.
He said the urban development body should consider the opinion of the residents of the area, where any housing complexes or societies were planned. ``The opinion of the residents concerned as well as the department concerned should be taken,'' he stressed.
He directed SUDA authorities to consult officials of the Water Supply Board along with residents and industries for the weir-cum-causeway to be built on Mindhola river on the outskirts of the city. Construction of the weir on the river is one of the six plans announced by SUDA last week.
Patel, who is in-charge minister for the district, also directed officials to chalk out a comprehensive plan to divert flood and rain water during the monsoon. He said the minister and secretary concerned should be informed of the plan and it be implemented before monsoons set in. He also suggested that a proposal to fetch a drainage cleaning machine be sent to the government before the budget was finalised.
He asked officials to construct embankments at all prone areas along the Tapi and asked for a data plan of such areas. He said the matter could be taken up with the chief minister for speedy implementation.
A number of officials including SUDA Chief Executive Authority J B Vora, District Panchayat President Harshad Chaudhary, District Development Officer Kamal Dayani were present for the meeting held on Saturday evening at Ayojan Bhawan.
