Kids lend colour to celebrations

CHANDIGARH, Jan 27: Prof I.B.S. Passi hoisted the national flag at the Republic Day celebrations held on the Panjab University campus. A programme of patriotic songs was also conducted and sweets were distributed.

A contingent of St Kabir Public School students representing St John's Ambulence Society and led by Akshay Sharma and Shveta Dang was adjudged best in the Republic Day march-past held at the Sector 17 Parade Ground.

Staff of the Bhakra Beas Management Board celebrated Republic Day at the BBMB Colony in Sector 35. BBMB chairman Maj Gen R.R. Oberoi unfurled the national flag and children of staff members presented a programme of folk dances and patriotic songs.

Students and staff of Montessori Public School, Karsan, celebrated Republic Day with a conference on the theme "Let Education Bring Peace". Among those who participated were Panjab University syndic Gopal Krishan Chathrath, Municipal Councillor Kamlesh, PSEB deputy secretary R.L. Arora and DAV professor Anil Sarwal and Banarsi Dass.

Students and staff of Amar College, sectors 21 and 37, conducted a programme of patriotic songs, skits and dances to celebrate Republic Day. Principal S.C. Vohra unfurled the national flag.

The Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee celebrated Republic Day by walking through Manimajra to proclaim the party's aversion to "the BJP's hidden agenda, its misrule at the Centre, and the misdeeds of the BJP-dominated Chandigarh Municipal Corporation". Led by CTCC President Venod Sharma, hundreds of Congressmen marched through the town; they were joined by SJP Manimajra block president Sushil Kumar. Later at a function organised at the Sector 22 Motor Market, a BJP activist, Ranjit Singh, joined the Congress. In the evening the party's Art, Culture and Foreign Affairs Cell organised a programme for students at Tagore Theatre. Chief guest Venod Sharma presented prizes to the winners of various categories and donated Rs 11,000 to St Stephen's School for an excellent performance.

The Bahujan Samaj Party's UT-level president, Principal Mata Ram Dhiman, hoisted the national flag at a ceremony organised by the party's Maloya Colony unit. He urged the gathering to realise the value of their vote and use the democratic process to bring about social and economic equality. Among others who spoke were: BSP local vice president Gurdev Singh and H.K. Sampley.

Bahujan Bachao Party president Balbir Singh Jangra hoisted the national flag at Burial village on the eve of Republic Day; a programme of patriotic songs was held and party members distributed sweets to children of the locality.

NABARD staff celebrated Republic Day with a cultural programme. General Manager Sukhbir Singh unfurled the national flag.The Sector 7 Central Government Employees Colony Association celebrated Republic Day with a flag-hoisting and cultural programme. R.C. Katoch was the chief guest.
