NEW DELHI, January 27: Eight-year-old Pankit who was kidnapped four days ago from Janta Market, Rajouri Gardens, was rescued from Sonepat today following the arrest of two men who allegedly abducted him for ransom. This was announced today at a press conference at the Police Headquarters by the DCP (West) Uday Sahay in whose district the crime was committed. Tracing the sequence of events that led to the arrest of Navin Kumar and Satish, the district police chief that after a ransom of Rs 4 lakh was demanded from Gurdev Singh, the boy's father, on the telephone, the call was traced to a PCO near the ISBT. The kidnappers, however, got away before the police arrived. The police team then determined the telephone number of each PCO in the area with the help of a mobile phone which displayed incoming call numbers.
More calls were received over the next two days, with the abductors insisting on the ransom amount despite the family's plea to bring the sum down to Rs 1.5 lakh. Each of these was made from different PCOs in the New and Old Delhi Railway Stations and ISBT.
Finally, a call made today was traced to a telephone number belonging to a PCO at the Old Delhi Railway Station, following which a three-member team rushed to the spot and confronted the two men. While one of them surrendered, the other reportedly offered resistance before being overpowered. They then led the police to their hideout in Sonepat where the boy was found.
