NEW DELHI, Jan 28: The Delhi police are checking several private hospitals, especially in the east Delhi area, to ascertain whether a young man got himself treated for wounds inflicted with a blunt object on January 23. They suspect he could be The Indian Express journalist Shivani's killer.
Among the several articles recovered from near Shivani's body, was the broken handle of a frying pan. The pan itself was found next to the kitchen. The police suspect that Shivani could have used the pan in self-defence and even managed to land a few blows on her assailant(s) before he or they snatched it from her. Experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) are already examining the blood stains on the frying pan. A senior police official says the CFSL report will establish whether the blood stains on the pan were Shivani's or that of her assailant(s).
So far, the police have been unable to get a description of the mysterious Rajeev Bhatnagar who logged in at 2.50 pm at the security gate ofShivani's apartment block. All that the security guards manning the gate recall is that he was ``fairly young''. Besides the CFSL report, the police are awaiting the report on the fingerprints lifted from various articles in Shivani's house.
Meanwhile, several journalists, affiliated with the Press Club of India, staged a silent protest march here on Wednesday. The protestors marched through Raisina Road carrying placards and demanding the immediate arrest of Shivani's killers. They later met Home Minister L K Advani to submit a memorandum demanding ``effective steps from the government to provide adequate security to mediapersons''.
