City judokas on the mat

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Jan 28: The fifth National Games slated to be held at Manipur from February 14, may be a fortnight away, but city judokas bound for the games are in a dire strait. The players are going through a round of trials to get a berth in the final team. Already, trials had been conducted thrice, but the players are apprehensive that the selection trials may take place once more.

Since the Amateur Judo Association, Chandigarh, had split into two units. Both the units held trials to select judokas for the National Games. But recently, COA, intervened and held a joint trials. Surprisingly, the trials took place at the time when most the senior players including women's were on their way for the national meet at Bangalore.

The judokas selected (16) by COA are undergoing a coaching camp at Sector 42 Sports Complex, while the players who took part in the Bangalore meet are also claiming for a place in the team.

``I have been representing Chandigarh since 1992,'' said Yashpal Solanki, who represented the country in the 13th Asian Games. He added: ``Trials should be conducted again. The player who wins should be in the team.''

However, the players, who are in the camp are reluctant to have another bout of trials. ``If they (COA) conducted trials again, we may go to the court,'' disclosed one of the players, who was in the camp.

There were more than 20 judokas in the camp. Baldev Singh, Sports Authority of India (SAI), coach, who is supervising the camp, however, refused to comment on the issue. ``I have no idea whether trials would be held again or not. I have been directed by the Chandigarh Sports Department to supervise the camp.''

KS Sahota, secretary, Chandigarh Olympic Association, was, however, not available for comments. ``We had selected players for the camp. The final team ill be held shortly,''said SN Vohra, secretary Chandigarh Hockey Association, who was one of the members appointed by COA to select players.

FCI cricket
Intermittent rain in the city forced all the three scheduled matches in the Food Corporation of India Inter-Zonal cricket tournament to be abandoned without a ball being bowled here today.

Headquarters were slated to meet South Zone, East were to play West and North were up against North-East Zone. Abandonment meant the six teams had to split points in this round robin tournament.
