BARIPADA, FEB 5: Barely a fortnight after Graham Staines and his two sons were set on fire, a 35-year-old nun of a Catholic church was allegedly raped by a person ``disguised'' as a woman, who offered her a lift in his car on Wednesday evening.According to the District Superintendent of Police, Pradip Kapoor, a case has been registered and the nun medically examined. The report is awaited, he said. A special squad, comprising seven police officers, has been formed to trace the accused.
According to the complaint filed by the nun--she is a teacher of a convent school run by the Church at Krushnachandrapur, about 18 km from Baripadashe had come here to take a test. At round 6 pm, after her examination, she boarded a rickshaw to go to the bus stand. An elderly lady, near the municipality building, told her that a car was waiting and offered her a lift. She accepted as she was ``anxious'' to reach the convent in time, she said. Two persons ``looking like ladies'' were sitting in the car, one at the wheel andthe other in the back seat.
According to the complaint, after a while, she realised that the two persons were men. The man near her attacked her and she was blindfolded and gagged. She was then raped, while the other man kept driving.
The driver stopped the vehicle near the Baisinga bus stop and asked the alleged rapist to replace him at the wheel. The nun was able to escape at this point and caught a bus to Gadadeulia church, where she narrated the incident to the sisters. Though she was allegedly raped on Wednesday, she filed her complaint with the police on Thursday evening. On the delay, she explained in her FIR, ``As I was in a shock, I discouraged my sisters to report this matter immediately to the police and thus escape further harassment.'' But her superiors and the community gave her confidence and convinced her about the need to file the FIR, she said.
