KMC staff union calls for bandh

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KOLHAPUR, Feb 5: The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation employees' union has given a call for an indefinite work closure after the civic estate department men assigned to demolish an illegal structure at Panjarapol industrial estate were allegedly roughed up.

The episode received an undesired twist with a patch-up bid between the KMC men and irate Panjarapol industrialists going astray with Shivaji, mayor Kanchan Kawale's husband allegedly manhandling KMC employees' union president Ramesh Desai.

A disgusted Municipal Commissioner Nitin Gadre left the Mayor's chamber after Kawale ``ran into'' Desai.

Gadre later said the demolition orders were appropriate prima facie. He also announced that a committee headed by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Vilas Patil and City Engineer D S Bhosale will probe the row.
