Sunil wins title in ITF meet

CHANDGIARH, Feb 5: Wild card entrant Sunil Kumar upset fellow Indian and top-seeded Kedar Tembe 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the boys singles title in the ITF Junior circuit Tennis championship, which concluded at Delhi today.

According to information received here, Sunil, who upset fifth-seeded Mark Weaver of Britain in the semifinals yesterday, faced no difficulty in ousting the top seed in the final. Tembe struggled to find his rhythm and could not give a tough fight to Sunil, who played well throughout to win the match.

Top-seeded Sheethal Gautham of India prevailed over compatriot Sonal Phadke 7-5, 6-4, to take home the girls singles title.

In the first set both Sheethal and Sonal matched each other well. But Sheethal was able to break Sonal at crucial points to take the first set (7-5).

Sheethal did not have much trouble taking the second set to wear the girls crown.

Sheethal, yesterday won the girls doubles pairing with Shruti Dhawan.

Milind leading
Milind Gowde of West Bengal beat fellow competitor Sujoy Bhattacharya to win three points at the end of third round in the Inter-Zonal IA and AD chess tournament being held at AG (Audit), Haryana premises in Sector 33, here today.

SK Rathore and Hari Om Sharma with 2.5 points each were placed second. Results: Hari Om Sharma bt SK Rathore; Milind Gowde bt Sujoy Bhattacharya; SK Sinha bt RKB Panchal; SK Srivastava bt SK Gosain; BN Prasad bt PR Harsh; Debashish Barua bt NV Ramakrishna.

Cricket tourney
Godrej Cricket Club will take on Coaching Centre, Panchkula in the opening match of the Amartes Cup League cricket tournament to be played on Februray 7, at Sector 5 ground in Panchkula.
