Govt needs education on IT: Menon

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB 7: M G K Menon today took politicians and bureaucrats to task saying that they were ill-equipped to meet the challenge thrown up by information technology (IT) which promised a booming $ 50 billion industry for the country in the decade.

Demanding a conceptual change in dealing with IT, Menon -- who is the co-chairperson of the National Task Force on IT -- said that he was still in the dark about the fate of his second report on IT hardware which was submitted to the Union Government in November last.

He was delivering the presidential address at the two-day conference on `Road Map to an Intelligent Kerala' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries.

``I am being frank. Politicians are putting nothing but roadblocks. It is not like setting up a cement factory. The Government should not sit on things.'' ``The first report of the Task Force on software was cleared immediately. By the time the second report was submitted, they found out the classical ways of raisingobjections.'

He said IT was sensational, growth-oriented. The $ 50 billion software growth for the country, hence, was ``realistic and not just moonshine''.He said the third report of the Task Force would be submitted by the end of this month. It deals with development of human resources required for the $ 50 billion industry, interface of IT with common man, research and development and the development of content.
