Girish Luthra invited to Japan
Girish Luthra, director of Luthra Dyeing & Printing Mills and noted environmentalist and industrialist, has been invited by the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarships, Japan, to participate a programme on industry and environment protection at Yokohama. He is among the 30 participants selected from all over India.

Gold sale
The State Bank of India has launched wholesale and retail sale of gold at Chowk Bazaar. The first batch of gold biscuits was handed over by Surat Municipal Commissioner S Jagdeesan. Apart from the traditional gold biscuits (10 tola bars), SBI is offering small pieces of 10 and five gms. The gold has been imported by the Bank from Switzerland and London. Speaking on the occasion, SBI Chief General Manager (Gujarat Circle) R Krishnamurthy said that the bank would soon launch a Gold Deposit Account Scheme whereby members of the public could deposit and withdraw gold at any given time.

Bank opened
Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana has inaugurated the Financial Co-operative Bank at Avishek Market on Ring Road. Speaking on the occasion, Rana underlined the importance of banking in the development of textile and diamond industry in Surat. Noted charted accountant Ravindra Vyapari explained the bank's special features.
