Pesi pockets Derby bounty on Saddle Up

Ashwamitra
MUMBAI, FEB 7: Jockey P Shroff who had finally chosen Saddle Up after the colt's facile victory in The Bangalore Derby was observed at his best as the son of Bold Russian and Queen's Rule won The McDowell Indian Derby, the national mega event held on Sunday at Mahalakshmi.

It appeared that Shroff had well planned the running strategy of his mount and executed it with perfection. Champion classic trainer Imtiaz A Sait had done his job with utmost attention and had taken all the measures needed for the rare occasion. As anticipated Masked Bandit, Montabella and Ace of Spades set the initial scorching pace. Shroff kept Saddle Up among the back markers keeping sharp eye on Running Flame, the hot favourite. He confidently rushed up within the striking distance at the bend and took commanding position at 400 m. Running Flame was alerted and her followers started dreaming the reproduction of her previous winning spurts but she met her waterloo. Even then she fought bravely as was evident from Shroff's all outefforts to maintain the lead till the winning post.

Supervite also running in the same colours of the leader thundered on the scene and humbled Runinmg Flame by depriving her of the runner-up berth. Priceless Asset managed to claim the last position in the frame.

In spite of UB Group's unprecedented publicity not more than 25,000 turned up for the event. The tote netted betting little over Rs one crore and the 44 bookmakers fielded Rs 1.06 crores.

It was interesting to note that UB Group chief Vijay Mallya, earned back almost Rs 43 lakhs of the total stakes of Rs 50 lakhs sponsored by him.
