Central Rule in Goa

NEW DELHI: President's Rule was imposed in Goa tonight and State Assembly dissolved. The proclamation clamping Central Rule was signed by President K R Narayanan late tonight. Earlier in the day, Home Minister L K Advani called on the President and discussed with him the Cabinet recommendation.

Phone tariff

NEW DELHI: Communications Minister Jagmohan today ruled out any steep hikes in telephone tariffs currently under the consideration of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). ``Any increases that have to be made should be gradual for a painless absorption,'' he said. Jagmohan said talks were on with TRAI to discuss the exact quantum of hike.

Hooch tragedy

TIRUVALLUR: 11 persons, including two women have succumbed to a killer brew, suspected to be laced with methanol, at Putalur in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, since Tuesday. Thirty-nine others have been admitted to the Tiruvallur government hospital and are reportedly out of danger.
