GANDHINAGAR, Feb 10: Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel today denied newspaper reports that the Government had issued a circular to all the Deputy Superintendents of Police and police commissioners, seeking details on the population and activities of Christian missionaries. After the weekly Cabinet meeting, Patel told reporters that the State Intelligence Bureau (IB) might have issued such a circular which `` is a routine exercise". He, however, said he would meet senior IB officials tomorrow and try to know of the circumstances that might have led the IB to issue the circular.
(A senior bureaucrat in the Sachivalaya maintained, "though the IB functions under the Home Department, it is not supposed to seek operational orders from the latter on such matter (issuing the circular)". The bureaucrat said the Government was yet to receive a show-cause notice from Gujarat High Court over the circular).
On the Deputy Speaker's election, Patel said the BJP favoured it during the coming budget session. He, however, evaded a direct reply to a query if the Bharatiya Janata Party would maintain the tradition of allotting the post to the Opposition, in this case the Congress.
Patel said the Governor's address to the session was finalised today, while the Finance Minister's would be finalised by the Cabinet on Monday. To a question, he said the government was studying the contents of the final report sent by the National Commission for Minorities on the recent happenings in the Dangs and elsewhere in South Gujarat, before placing it in the House.
