Woman sets herself, two children on fire

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Feb 10: One Shardaben Vitthal Sawaliya, a resident of plot no 149 of Abhaynagar Society on the Varachha Road, set herself and her two children on fire late on Tuesday evening.

According to the Varachha police, Sawaliya took the extreme step because of the alleged mental and physical torture by her relatives.

While one of her sons, Sagar (2) died on the spot, her other son Bhavesh (5) succumbed to burn injuries in the New Civil Hospital, where he was shifted after being provided initial treatment at the Ashaktashram hospital, on Wednesday afternoon.

The police registered a case against two persons of the family after the deceased's sister -- in a complaint lodged in the Varachha police station -- accused Shardaben's husband Vitthal Sawalaiya (Patel) and Manjula Sawaliya, her elder sister-in-law, of harassing her sister mentally and physically. She, however, did not specify the reason behind the harassment. A resident of Lathi village in Amreli district, the deceased Shardaben had been married to Vitthal, a resident of Moti Liliya village of Amroli taluka, about eight years ago. Vitthal, working as a diamond polisher then, shifted to Varachha Road, and was staying with his family in his elder brother, Babubhai Sawaliya's house.

While a case of torture under sections 498 (a), 506 and 114 of the IPC has been registered, no arrests were made till Wednesday evening.
