Four held for fight with cops

SURAT, Feb 10: The Athwa Lines police, early on Wednesday morning, arrested four people involved in a brawl in the Nanpura area of the city on Tuesday night during which two State Reserve Police (SRP) guards were injured.

The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint lodged by one Bhanuben Shantilal Kahar, a resident of Banarsi Mohalla of Nanpura and working as a fish vendor in the Nanpura Mutton Market.

Kahar named Nooruddin Kamruddin Shaikh, a resident of Jamaal Shah Mohalla, Nanpura, Shamsuddin Kamruddin, Iqbal Abdul Kadri and Irfan Haji Khan -- all residents of Mutton Market area -- of the city as accused in the brawl.

Bhanuben, in her complaint told the police that she was selling fish at the market at around 8.30 pm when Nooruddin was loitering around the place. When she asked him to keep away, the other three beat her up.

The complainant then reported the matter to a couple of SRP personnel posted there. According to police, the two SRP personnel -- Assistant Sub-Inspector Panney Singh and Constable Parmeshwar Prajapati -- were injured after the accused pelted stones at them.

While Singh was hit by a stone on the forehead, Prajapati received minor injuries on his body. A case under section 323, 504, 332, 337 and 114 of the IPC and section 135 of the Bombay Police Act has been registered against the accused.
