PATIALA, Feb 10: The two-day Punjabi folk music festival concluded here today on the Punjabi University campus with artists regaling the audience by giving impressive performances on various traditional instruments.A variety of programmes, including singing of heroic deeds of warriors, male folk dances, ``ghugga'' and other folk songs were presented at the festival. The main ``akhara'' where the artists presented ``Malwai gidha'' was a centre of attraction for visitors.
An exhibition depicting traditional musical instruments like ``been'', ``alghoze'', ``sarangi'', ``bugdu'', ``sapp'' (snake), ``kato'' and ``dhol'' was organized in the museum of the university.
A panel discussion was organised in the evening which was convened by B. S. Nanda of the Department of Punjabi Development where the multifaceted effects of this traditional music festival were discussed.
A galaxy of eminent panelists who gathered here to take part in the discussion said that historical literary and commercial value of such traditional heritage could not be ruled out.
During the discussion, it was decided that a comprehensive book containing details of Punjabi ``lok sangeet virasat'' be published.
It was also decided that from next year, this festival would be organised in collaboration with various inter-disciplinary departments of the university in order to synchronise latest techniques and technology with the traditional art form.
A live recording (documentary) of the performances in audio-visual form would be prepared for Doordarshan. This would also include interviews with the traditional folk artists.
Those who participated in the panel discussion included Satish Verma (Punjabi drama), Jaswinder Singh (Punjabi), S. S. Joshi (linguistics), N. S. Kapoor (journalism), B. S. Khaira (Punjabi), Saroj (museum), Alka Pande, art critic, and Param Bakhshish Singh (Punjab historical studies) and Gurnam Singh, head, music department.
