Basad gets going

NEW DELHI, FEB 10: Basad Ali began his defence of the Rs 5 lakh Cyanamid Open Golf championship in style, taking the lead with a three-under 69 on the first day today. That gave him a two-stroke lead over Vijay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar (both Lucknow) and Mohammed Salim of Calcutta at one-under 71.

There were five ties for the 10th place, while Honda Siel PGA champion Uttam Singh Mundy of Calcutta, Classic Indian Open winner Feroz Ali and Indrajit Bhalotia were among eight tied for joint 15th at two-over 74.

Basad started with a bogey when his second shot got plugged in a bunker and he missed a five-footer putt after coming out. But from then on he played his iron shots superbly. On the fourth, he was left with a two-footer putt after chipping from the edge of the green.

SCORES

69 Basad Ali; 71, Vijay Kumar, Mohd Salim, Sanjay Kumar; 72 Balbir Verma, Manohar, Ranjit Singh, S K Malik, S K Ali.
