Thoroughbreds' auction in Pune

Ashwamitra
MUMBAI, FEB 10: In a break from tradition, the annual auction of two-year-old thoroughbreds will commence on Thursday at Pune Race Course. The two-day bloodstock sale, earlier conducted in Mumbai, is being shifted beyond the ghats after consultations with breeders and vendors.

The entries for the current year's auction have fallen to 867, compared with last year's figure of 1,051; out of them nearly six hundred youngsters are likely to arrive. Not more than 200 actual lots will come in the ring, as most of them have been `sold privately.'

The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), in an effort to broad-base ownership, have passed norms for `syndicated' ownership. This will allow up to 10 individuals to jointly own a horse, as against four previously. This progressive step will give a boost to new owners to enter the sport.
