Marathwada hailstorm losses pegged at Rs 1-cr

AURANGABAD, FEB 12: The hailstorm that accompanied unseasonal showers all over Marathwada on February 8 has caused widespread damage of crop, livestock, cattle and property in the region according to initial survey by local administration in each of the seven districts of the region. Nanded and neighbouring Parbhani were the two most severely hit districts.

While extensive survey by the respective local administrations is still on the agriculture department is yet to institute a survey, officials said. The losses are estimated to be well over Rs 1 crore.

NANDED

In all 127 villages have been affected in five tehsils in Nanded district. Loha tehsil suffered the most, where eighty eight villages suffered losses, followed by Biloli with eighty eight affected villages. Other tehsils include Mukhed (13 villages), Kandhar (six), and Bhokar (three).

A sixty-year-old woman died by lightning in Loha, while nine more were injured in the hailstorm, Resident Deputy Collector M G Mandurke informed TheIndian Express.

  • LIVESTOCK: In all 115 livestock were reported dead in the tehsils of Biloli (25), Kandhar (21) and Loha (69). The number of cattle dead in the three tehsils is put at 553.

  • HOUSES: 2,554 houses were partially damaged, the losses are around Rs 20.54 lakhs.

  • CROP: Over 74 per cent of crop over an aggregate area of 2756 hectares belonging to 11821 farmers has been spoiled in Loha. Damages have been estimated at Rs 27.56 lakhs.

    PARBHANI

    In all 31 villages of Gangapur Tehsil have been affected. While more than 50 per cent of the crop on over 1079 hectares has been damaged, the toll on the remaining 295 hectares of affected area is less than fifty per cent. In all sixty-nine livestock have perished according to an initial survey.

    PALAM TEHSIL

    Two villages in the area have been affected. While over fifty per cent of the crop on 11.30 hectares has been damaged, on the remaining ten acres the damage has come to less than fifty percent.

    No kind of damage has been reported from rest of the nine tehsils in the district. No damages were reported in the survey conducted in Jalna and Osmanabad dist.

    The average rainfall recorded in the seven districts was as follows (figures in parenthesis indicate average rainfall.

    Nanded 220.6 mm (24.5 mm)

    Parbhani 195.4 mm (16.2 mm)

    Beed 40.8 mm (4.5 mm)

    Latur 4. 1mm (5.9 mm)

    Aurangabad 55.5 mm (6.9 mm)

    Jalna 19.4 mm(11.4mm) on February eight; 36.6 mm (14.6 mm) on February nine)
