Seven Wing lift WAC football trophy

CHANDIGARH, Feb 12: Seven Wing Air Force won the Western Air Command Inter-Area Football Championship by beating 12 Wing Air Force by 4-2 in the tie-breaker at the Air Force Station ground here. The teams were tied 1-1 in the stipulated period. As extra time could not resolve the dispute, the organisers ordered the tie-breaker.

Divya Nandu, Prodyut Biswas and Apurba Nanda Bandopadhya converted their penalties for 7 Wing. For 12 Wing only Bhattacharya was the lone scorer. S K Khullar, Nanda Kumar and Pathan of 12 Wing muffed their chances.

Earlier, it was 12 Wing Air Force who forged ahead with a goal by R Singh in the first half, while Jayanta Ghose restored parity for 7 Wing in the second half.

Air Commodore S K Banerjee, Air Officer Commanding 12 Wing Air Force presented the trophy to the winners.

Rural sports
The Chandigarh Sports Department is organising the annual Rural Sports at Dadu Majra on February 27 and 28. Competitions will be held in circle kabaddi (open), wrestling below 40, below 60, below 80 and above, shootingball, tug of war, athletics -- 100 m, 200 m, 1500 m, long jump, high jump, shot put and 100 m for sarpanches and panches.

Entry closes with District Sports Officer O P Puri, Sports Department, Chandigarh, Sector 9.

Technical officials
The Judo Federation of India has appointed P P Singh of Chandigarh as a member of the jury for the judo competitions in the National Games to be held in Imphal from Feburary 14 to 25.

Meanwhile, the Amateur Athletic Association Chandigarh has nominated Kuldip Singh Lall and Iqbal Singh as technical officials for the athletic competitions of the National Games, according to AAAC secretary Ravinder Chaudhary.

Parveen Kumar of Chandigarh will work as chair umpire for the tennis competitions in Imphal, according to AITA referee Dushan Deo.
