Lofts, mezzanine to be regulated

MUMBAI, February 24: The Mayor-in-Council today passed the proposal for regulating lofts and mezzanine floors and has forwarded it to the Municipal Commissioner to make necessary changes in the Development Corporation (DC) regulations.

After the necessary changes are made in the DC rules, the proposal will be placed in the general body meeting of the corporation for approval following which it will be forwarded to the state government for a final approval. ``No sooner it is approved, we will implement it,'' Satam added. However, lofts and mezzanine floors which have come up after August 15, 1997 will be demolished, he informed.

Among the various decisions taken at the meeting, the Mayor informed that the BEST Undertaking has decided to purchase 119 buses from the bus manufacturers, Ashok Leyland. Each chasis cost around Rs 7.81 lakh apart from its transportation and bodybuilding charges. BEST will soon be scrapping a fleet of nearly 100 old buses which have completed their life-term of 15 years and run ofover 10 lakh kms each.

The undertaking will also purchase 50 buses from Tatas. Leyland has so far had a hundred per cent monopoly with regard to BEST buses.``Tatas have now agreed to design their buses according to BEST specifications on durability. We may buy more if we are get good results. Both Leyland and Tatas are competitors and based on performance we will place our orders,'' said Satam. A decision has also been taken to auction imported spare parts of vehicles brought at the rate of over Rs 20 lakh some two decades ago. The auction should yield around Rs 5.84 lakh, he added.

The BEST has also passed a proposal to begin plying its own boats at the Manori and Marve creek. ``A comprehensive study will be carried out on the viability of the project. The general view is that BEST should take interest in such ventures,'' he added.

Contracts worth over Rs 32.62 crore for a period of three years has been approved for clearing of mud and garbage from 20 wards in the city. Wards A C and E will be left outsince the contracts are caught up in litigations, said Satam.
