Bury the hatchet

Less than two weeks after failing in their bid to oust President Bill Clinton, Republicans after a White House meeting pledged to work with Clinton across party lines ``to do what the American people expect. We're going to work together, hopefully across party lines in the Congress, and with the administration to do what the American people expect of us,'' said Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott after meeting with Clinton.

Just two weeks ago, Lott had been leading a Republican call for Clinton's ouster during a bitter impeachment trial that split the nation's leadership down party lines. ``When asked if he now trusted the President, Lott said: ``The real issue is `will we work together to get our job done?'''``We are starting to work to put together ideas. That's the first step,'' Lott said, echoing Clinton's earlier calls to improve education and safeguard the future of social security. ``We need to put the ideas so we can frame the debate so that we can move forward for what the agenda is for the Americanpeople,'' Lott said.
