Palampur: A two-year-old girl was killed after a tempo (no HP-37-2652) hit her at Mundi village in this sub-division last evening, said S.R. Rana, deputy superintendent of police here today. Police have impounded the vehicle, arrested the driver and registered a case under Sections 279,337, and 304 (A). Meanwhile, a house was burgled at Averi in broad daylight with thieves parting away with cash and jewelry worth nearly 40,000, added Rana.Crime
Sundernagar: Local police on Tuesday arrested four persons, including two women of Phagla village near here, in connection with the murder of a woman of their family about two weeks ago. According to DSP Gurmit Singh, the deceased was strangulated to death on February 13 and her body was consigned to flames at night in a jungle by her husband, father-in-law and the two women. Kanta was reported missing from her village on February 13 and February 18 in two different complaints lodged with Sundernagar police station, Singh added. He said the police had recovered the ashes of the deceased from the jungle which would be sent for chemical analysis. All the four accused have, meanwhile, confessed the crime before the police, the DSP further added.
Kapurthala: The Kapurthala Police have busted inter-district gang of thieves and recovered stolen articles worth Rs 10 lakhs from their possession. SSP Iqbal Singh told mediapersons here today that police recovered one truck, GRX-5561, which had been stolen from Ahmedabad; Maruti car bearing registration number PBO8E 436, four scooters stolen from Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Tarn Taran, New Sawraj make tractor besides six television sets stolen by Samrala bye-pass of Ludhiana from their possession.

Moga: The employees of the FCI in Punjab in persuance of the call given by the Bharatiya Khadya Karamchari Sangh have decided to hold demonstrations in front of their offices on February 25 and 26 in support of their demands. The demands include time-bound promotion policy, reforms in field operations to minimise losses or damages pending wage revisions with effect from January, 1997, and sanction of additional staff due to increase in volume of work.
Workshop
Amritsar: About 50 young scientists and writers are participating in a three-day science communicators' workshop being organised by the Punjab State Council of Science and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh, under the auspices of Physics Department of the Guru Nanak Dev University here from February 25 to 27. H.S. Virk, coordinator, PSCST workshop, has said the main purpose of this workshop was to train young scientists and writers to prepare popular science articles for newspapers, radio.
Free camp
Patiala: A total of 205 family welfare operations were performed at a free camp organised by the Patiala district health authorities, under the supervision of Civil Surgeon Dr S.P.S. Sohal, at Rajpura Civil Hospital on Tuesday. Doctors and para-medical staff of the Civil Hospital, besides the staff of the primary health centres of Dera Bassi, Harpalpura and Kauli in addition to four teams of surgeons, helped conduct the camp. The Rajpura Youth Akali Dal organised a free community kitchen on the occasion and the Rajpura Rotary Club donated 50 wall clocks for distribution among the motivators. Dr Sohal said three more such camps were planned at Nabha, Samana and the Patiala Model Town dispensary.
