Chennai, Mumbai colleges play draw

AMRITSAR, Feb 24: P C Chennai and S A College, Mumbai played a one-all draw on the sixth day of the seventh Jawaharlal Nehru SAIL Champions Colleges hockey tournament being played here at the Guru Nanak Dev University Sports Complex.

Both the teams were on offensive from the very beginning and repeatedly attacked each other's citadel but could not succeed. Both the team wasted a number of penalty corners. It was Chennai's college who were able to take lead just before the half time whistle through C S Paglenthy who scored a fine field goal.

After the lemon break, S A Mumbai attacked repeatedly to equalise but again their efforts could not bear fruit. Centre forward Iyas Butt connecting a through pass from right defender dodging the goalkeeper flicked the ball in making the score 1-1 in the 48th minute.

Both the teams tried their luck again through some splendid moves but all fails. Hence the match ended in a draw with 1-1 at the final whistle.

In the second match of the day last year's champions RMC Rourkela thrashed Lakshmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education Gwalior by 8-1 goals. They proved superiority in all departments of the game. Jitender Larka and Anil Parful scored two goals each while B Parkash, Patrick Larka, Linus Tirke struck one goal each on behalf of the winners while Suraj Ramtek reduced the margin scoring solitary goal on the losers side.

In another match, GGDSD College, Chandigarh beat Birsa College, Ranchi in a one-sided affairs by 4-0. Navdeep Singh and Jasmit Singh scored to goals each.

College athletics
The Khalsa College, Amritsar will hold the 80th annual athletic meet and prize distribution function on February 25 and 26, according to Principal M S Dhillon.

PAU athletics
Ludhiana: The 33rd annual athletic meet of Punjab Agricultural University got under way at PAU grounds here today. College of Agriculture dominated the proceedings in the boys section while College of Home Science athletes stole the limelight in girls section.

College of Home Science (Ludhiana) bagged the first prize in march past followed by College of Veterinary Science (COVS) and College of Home Science (Kaoni) secured second and third place respectively.

Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Director of Research inaugurated the meet and PAU Vice Chancellor G.S. Kalkat presided over the function.

100 m: 1 Manjit Singh (COA), 2 Sunil Joshi (COA), 400 m: 1 Amolak Singh (COA), 2 Jagdip Singh (COA). 1500 m: 1 Jatinder Kumar (COA), 2 Surjit Pal Singh (COA). 110 m hurdles: 1 Satinderjeet Singh (COVS), 2 Jagjit Singh (COVS)., 20 km walk: 1 Abhinandan (COA), 2 Manpreet Singh (COA), 21 km half marathon: 1 Balraj Singh Grewal (COA Gr. Engg.), 2 Abhinandan (COA). Broad jump 1: Manjit Singh (COA), 2 Harpreet Singh (COAE).

Girls
100 m: 1 Gurpreet Kaur (COHS Ldh), 2 Gunjeet Kaur (COHS Ldh), 800 m: 1 Sumedha (COHS Ldh), 2 Manreet (COA), 100 m hurdles: 1 Gulpreet (COHS Ldh), 2 Surjeet Kaur (COHS Ldh). Shot put: 1 Bimi Singh (College of Basic Sciences), 2 Mandeep (COAE).

Road race
Hoshiarpur: The fourth annual prize money Avtar Singh Memorial Road Race will be staged at village Panjoura, near here, on March 7. The winner of this 14-km race will get a cash prize of Rs. 5,000, while the runner up and third-placed will be richer by Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively.

Entries close with Harjeet Singh Minhas, H.No. 594-A, Sector 46, Chandigarh on or before March 6.
